Dog Hair Loss Vet
Unexplained hair loss in dog?
I have a 3 year old mix breed that suddenly started to lose hair about a year ago. We took her to the vet and did skin scrapes for the mange and she has been tested for almost every kind of skin disease and infection there is. We have run the vet bill up over 4,000 dollars between 3 different doctors and nobody can give us a reason for her hair loss. She is otherwise very healthy and we have 2 other dogs and 2 cats that remain unaffected by what she has. She is now totally bald but she doesnt have any sores at all and her skin isnt itchy. Has anyone else had a dog with a similar problem and was the dog ever diagnosed?
She didnt scratch the fur off, it just fell out like when you would pet her or brush her.
We did put her on a special diet in the begginning and it didnt help. She has had almost every test possible done and it still remains undetermined.
Thyroid was fine
No fleas or mites
You say her thyroid is fine – have you also checked her adrenal function (cushings disease) and hormone levels? Doubtful if it is allergies since she doesn’t itch. Here are two links, both mention melatonin as a possible cure for some causes of alopecia. It is an over the counter natural sleep aid. It is cheap enough that I would at least try it on a trial basis. One link is very informative on various causes of alopecia, but I am including a second link since it has recommended dosages on a trial of melatonin.
