Is this Adrenal Disease – ferrets?

my female ferret has had an enlarged vulva for more than a week. But absolutely no hair loss. is this this adrenal disease? her behavior or personality has not changed.
she’s going to be 5 years old

It could be. It is a symptom of Adrenal disease. NORMALLY older ferrets get adrenal disease, like ove three years old. It is not un heard of though for a young Ferret to get it. Though a swollen Vulva canmean several things.

I have had two Ferrets with swollen vulvas. They were both young, around a year old. One We gave a series of HCG shots and it brought the sweling down which told us she had been in heat. She was then spayed and has been fine since. No the HCG shots are not dangerouse. For a ferret to be in heat is dangerouse as they will not come out of heat by themselves. They must either be bred or brought out of heat with the HCG shot, I will probebly take at least two shots given about 10 days apart and maybe three or four. You should see improvment after the first shot if she is in heat. Spaying her while she is in heat can be dangerous. It would be a much better idea for the ferret to have the HCG shot first.

I had another ferret who had a swollen vulva and she was also young, again around a year old. The first thing we tried wa the HCG shots aand after two shots there was no improvment. We decided to try a round of antibiotic, i think it was Amoxi. Her vulva when down and she has been fine since.

Adrenal disease can be hard to diagnose. There is blood test but even then they are not 100% and can be expencive. If she is young and or has no other signs or symptoms of adrenal i would suggest you try either the shots, though if she is over a year and never been in heat before that is not likely the problem, or a round of antibiotics first.

Adrenal disease not only is hard to dx it can also be hard to treat. If the ferret is not too old and other wise healthy you han try surgery to remove the adrenal gland. Usualy though if you remove one and not the other is eventualy moves to the other and that one too may need to be removed. The problem with this is first of all, while one,(i forget which) is not toohard to get to or remove. The other is hard to get to and can be hard to remove. Another problem can be, if both adrenal glads are removed, They can go into some kind of shock. If caught soon enough can be treated but often is not caught in time. There are medicines that many ferrets have lived for a long time taking though more likley than not she will not live as long as she would have had she not gotten adrenal disease. Hope this helps.
