Making dreadlocks cause thinning hair or hair loss?

I've seen posted on some forums for different people claim their dreadlocks (or your friends) have caused his hair thin, leading to bald spots, or simply made them lose their hair. At the same time, I've seen published in Dread most frequent questions simply a myth. So what is the real answer? And just so you know, I'm not interested in their opinions about the dreadlocks. I just want the answer to this question.
