Hair Loss Skin Disease
Is this adrenal disease in my ferret or just a skin issue?

My male ferret has recently had some hair loss along the base of his tail and I have noticed him biting/chewing that area as though he has an itch. I thought that he just had a skin irritation that seemed to be getting better. Yesterday, I read more about adrenal issues in ferrets and find that hair loss around the tail is one of the sure signs of an issue. Right now his fur is a little sparse around his tail but no area is bare. He’s due for his yearly checkup soon so he will go to the vet’s in the next month or so but I will take him sooner if needed. I am not sure how old he is – we are at least the third (and final) people who’ve had him. We got him when my brother in law passed away and my husband’s sister couldn’t keep him. The brother in law adopted him from a friend.

We have also recently moved, so he’s in a new place. He’s eating and drinking normally. He has been scratching himself more frequently like he has an itch (no fleas – I checked thoroughly).

I agree with one of the above posters that hair loss on the tail can be a result of ferret acne (blackheads will appear on the tail) or something known as rat tail (the hair falls off for no apparent reason and then grows back in at the next coat change). Some people believe that rat tail is actually a sign that a ferret will eventually get adrenal.

However, I also have to disagree with that poster because you said the hair loss is starting at the base of the tail. When the hair loss begins at the base of the tail, you should have it checked. Normal hair loss on the tail that’s of no major concern will start at the tip of the tail. Adrenal also causes excessive itching.

I think you’ll be better off getting him to the vet earlier than your original date. The sooner it’s detected (if it is adrenal), the better your chances are of having your little fuzzy around longer.

If it’s adrenal, one thing I know of that might help relieve some of his itchiness is to let him soak in a nice warm bath with some colloidal oatmeal (I know Aveeno is one brand that makes it) about once a week or every other week. Don’t use any soap, just fill the tub with warm water, add some colloidal oatmeal, and place your ferret in the tub. We used to do this with our ferrets that had adrenal. It’s NOT a cure for adrenal, but I really believe it helped relieve some of the itchiness associated with the disease. I’ve also talked to other ferret owners that have tried it and they believe the same thing.

Good luck with your little guy!
