Non-Surgical Ways to Fight Hair Loss
Rob Angelino, founder of hair loss clinic HAIRLAB, a medical and natural hair restoration center located in Beverly Hills, California, talks about the different treatments that can be used to combat hair loss before you move to expensive transplant surgery:
At HAIRLAB, when a client comes in, we try various non-invasive techniques before we move to a hair transplant. These are often effective when used in conjunction with one another on a regular basis and don’t require a more expensive and invasive surgical procedure.
Even when we do the surgical hair transplant procedure, hair loss is an ongoing battle, and we usually inform our clients that they often have to come in for a second operation. We always recommend that a client uses some or all of the following alternatives after the procedure to combat the constant battle that is hair loss.
If you wish to try out some alternatives before moving to a hair transplant procedure, we have found that the following products when used alone or in conjunction with one another can be extremely effective. Let’s look at some hair treatments on the market today:
Laser Therapy: Also known as low level light therapy, or LLLT, uses a cold red laser and infrared technology to help stimulate your cells which increases blood flow and therefore hair regrowth. The laser penetrates the skin and hair follicles and gets the blood circulating much faster, which causes the hair to come back thicker and stronger. This is through a process known as PhotoBioStimulation, and we regularly recommend laser therapy as part of an overall hair treatment. You can purchase a stand-alone unit, a hand-held unit or go a salon regularly for treatment. The process increases circulation and promotes healthy hair. And we always recommend it both before and after surgery.
Rogaine: The off-brand name for Rogaine is Minoxidil. You apply it directly to your head and, like many products to fight hair loss, it increases the blood flow to your scalp to strengthen and regrow hair. Many people don’t like Rogaine because it sticky and must be applied twice a day, but new Rogaine Foam is preferred. It really is not entirely effective on its own, however. If used by itself, the hair that does regrow is often thin and wispy, but minoxidil is definitely effective when used in conjunction with other treatments.
Topical Stimulants: Some topical stimulants on the market that claim to stop DHT, and they are known as topical DHT blockers. Revivogin is a well-known topical product that claims to block DHT, and it works quite well. Nuhair is another product that combines DHT blockage with supplemental nourishment that also is effective. I’ve seen people get results with these products. It thickens the hair by penetrating follicles and cleaning them out. Stinging nettles, which is an herb that works on stimulating blood flow, is usually a main active ingredient. These products are not FDA-approved as they only claim to help thicken hair. They don’t claim to directly regrow hair, so results may vary.
Propecia: This medication, also known off-brand as finasteride, is the only product that I know that truly genuinely works to regrow hair. It is a prescription pill that contains a synthetic anti-androgen, which blocks DHT internally. It was originally approved in 1992 as a drug for the prostate, but it was found that a small dose (1 mg) blocks male pattern baldness. I use it myself, so I know it works. It is only for males, however.
Natural supplements: We recommend these products, but do not sell them ourselves. These are any combination of chemicals and enzymes and proteins that your body may need more of to promote healthy hair growth. The one that has been really popular is Biosil. This has an active ingredient called silicon and the principle is that it strengthens the collagen in your hair, skin and nails, causing these to grow back better, healthier and stronger.
The way we know about this product is we have had five celebrity female clients tell us about Biosil and its effectiveness. They come in and tell you that their hair is coming back thicker and stronger, so I started trying it too and noticed results. I’m my own guinea pig. Several formulas have been on the market. According to the FDA, you can’t make medical claims about these supplements to say that they regrow hair, but you can say that they make hair appear stronger and thicker.
Viviscal is another natural supplement that uses a combination of vitamins and fish oil to strengthen hair. Shen Min is a formula that combines herbs like He Shou Wu and Horse Chestnut Extract with co-factor nutrients such as Silica, Biotin and Saw Palmetto. I am sure they all have benefits. You just have to believe and stick with it.
The biggest problem clients have is sticking with the program. We live in instant society, but that’s not how it works with hair loss. You have to stay on these products for a long time before you notice real results. You have to take your before and after shots and monitor your success. If you stick with one or a combination of these alternatives, you can reverse hair loss.
