Hair Loss in Cat….HELP!?
My niece’s cat is about 1 year old. She had been an indoor cat up to about 2 months ago so she goes outdoors a lot. A few weeks ago they noticed the hair on the tail had come off (we are not sure how). So they took her to the vet and the vet gave her cortisone shots to start hair regrowth. The hair on the tail is now starting to grow back. At the same time, my little niece’s one eyebrow hair started falling out, too. This could be a coincidence and her doctor didn’t have any answers and gave her cream to start the hair growing and now her eyebrow hair is coming back. Now the cat has a huge bald spot on her head like someone took a shaver and shaved it right off. They are taking her to the vet again tomorrow but what the heck is going on? Could the cat hair loss and my niece’s eyebrow hair loss be related? She smothers that cat and is in her face all the time because she loves her. Cat doesn’t seem too uncomfortable by the hair loss but she is definitely not herself. HELP! Thank you!
I don’t believe that it is mange, if your niece lost some hair also… while the mites that cause mange in cats can infect humans, it will not cause hair loss in humans.
The cat probably has a ringworm infection. It’s very common in cats, especially cats who are outdoors. It’s a fungal growth that attaches itself to the hair follicles, and spreads over time. This can be given to people. The vet should do a fungal culture, and the cat should be quarantined to one area for awhile. Children, and adults with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to this than healthy adults.
To prevent recurrence, anywhere the cat had access to indoors needs to be sanitized with a bleach solution 1:10, and the carpets need to be vacuumed and the vacuum bag disposed of immediately. All bedding, linens, clothing that the cat had access to should be thoroughly cleaned, and hard surfaces also need to be cleaned with the bleach solution. Anything that cannot be sanitized should be disposed of (collars, toys, etc)
Most of the time, if someone gets the ringworm infection from their pet, it occurs around the same time as the signs in the pet.
I just got a new kitten, and he is in quarantine in the bathroom for the time being for this very thing…. I thought he was pulling the fur out, or licking himself to the point of baldness….. but that’s not the case.
