Why People Lose Hair
Why do people with cancer lose their hair going completely bald?
It’s not the cancer. It’s the treatment for cancer that causes them to lose their hair.
Chemotherapy is able to target fast growing cells and kill them as they divide and grow. Cancer cells are generally fast growing. The only other cells in the body that grow fast are hair follicle cells and some gastrointestinal cells. Chemotherapy kills hair cells making the hair fall out. Chemotherapy can also kill off cells in the GI tract which is why patients feel nauseous.
All of these are side effects that are temporary. Once the chemotherapy stops, than the hair grows back and the nausea will stop.
Not all chemotherapy will cause the hair to fall out. My son is on a chemo right now and his hair is growing back.
Radiation that includes the head can also make the hair fall out.
